Investigations that hold up in court share one trait — every claim cites its source, and every action is in a record. That bar is reachable on paper. In practice, an HR investigator with a real caseload doesn't have thirty hours to spend documenting a single matter while the next one is already on the calendar.

Marshal exists to take that scaffolding off the investigator's plate. The legal product is still the human investigator's judgment — Marshal handles the question plans, memo drafts, timeline assembly, citation tracking, and audit chain that surround every decision. The investigator decides; Marshal makes sure the record reflects it.

Marshal was founded by a former employment lawyer and HR compliance leader who has worked inside large corporations on both sides of every kind of workplace investigation — as the practitioner running them, and as the lawyer companies called when something needed to hold up under scrutiny.

That dual-seat experience shaped what Marshal is and what it isn't. Marshal isn't a generalized AI assistant given an HR coat of paint, and it isn't an enterprise platform that bolts AI onto an aging case-management workflow. It's a tool designed by someone who has lived both sides of a defensible investigation, built around the work that actually moves a case forward — and the record that makes it defensible later.

A few principles guide everything Marshal builds.

• AI is a drafter, never a decider. Every memo, question plan, finding rationale, and report section Marshal produces is a draft. The investigator edits, accepts, or rejects each one. Determinations require the investigator's own reasoning. Marshal surfaces evidence on both sides; it never makes the call.
• Every claim cites a source. Reports tie back to specific witness statements, documents, or timeline events. Nothing floats. This isn't a feature — it's a precondition for a defensible report.
• The record is the witness. Every action on a case appends to a hash-chained audit log, attested daily to immutable storage. Three years from now, in deposition, the chain is what answers the questions your lawyer doesn't want to have to guess at.
• Defensibility comes from restraint. Investigators don't need decoration; they need a record that holds up. We don't ship features that don't earn their place in a defensible investigation.
